I wrote this song about a kid I knew when I was in grade school, and who got picked on a lot. Even though I personally didn't tease him, I never stood up for him. I've thought of that all my life
lyrics
When I was young my only dream – was to be a baseball star
To hit a fastball low and away – and drive it oh so far
But I was never picked to play – no matter what I did
I was always the spaz the weirdo – that little wheelchair kid
When I got older all I wanted – was to fly to outer space
To be a famous Astronaut – everyone would know my face
The kids back home would be in shock – when the President shook my hand
But then I come crashing back to earth – the wheelchair kid again
But in my dreams I’m so tall and strong – and I can run so fast
And I’d kiss all the pretty girls – and ask them all to dance
Forget about these stupid wheels – and maybe take a chance
And maybe I could have one friend – is that too much to ask?
Now I’m a man, and I’m no longer – stuck in that wheelchair
But, I have these funny crutches – and people still sometimes stare
I met a girl just right for me – and that’s really where the story begins
And we just had a daughter – so the wheelchair kid wins
Now in my dreams I have everything – and the past is all but gone
And I’ve got my two pretty girls – What I needed all along
Childhood can be hard and mean – but it can sometimes make you
strong
And it’s often worse on those who tease – because now they know
its wrong
